The truth about Height Gains
Hello,

I have read quite some of the posts on this forum, and I do not mean to be rude, but a vast majority of these posts is complete and utter bullcrap!

So, some facts for you all:

1. Due to gravity and muscle relaxation, you can be up to 1-2 cm taller in the morning, right after you wake up, then at night, before you go to sleep.

2. Working out with weights will not stunt growth. Not unless unsupervised and with huge weights and performed incorrectly.
working out with 8lbs will, i repeat, NOT stunt growth. If any, it will increase your metabolism and release of testosterone and growth hormones, making you more likely to get to your maximum height.

3. Height is, unfortunately, for the majority based on genetics. If your parents are 5' tall, you will most likely not become 7'.
There are loads of scientific data on this subject, since almost every child's growth patterns are recorded.
There are formulas for calculating your maximum height.
Wether you reach this or not, depends on several things, such as health, amount of sleep, working out, and your diet.

4. Hanging will not make you taller. If anything, your muscles try to keep your body together.
What can work to a small extent, however, is stretching.
This lengthens the muscles, and optimizes the muscle toning, 'uncramping' the muscles.
This is THE BEST thing you can do to gain size (by a small amount)

5. If you are in puberty, make sure you regurarely work out. Both cardio-vascular and strength training will help you releasing testosterone and growth hormones, increasing your growth (theoretically, since no hard scientific data is available on this subject)
I do recommend that you stretch every single day. Go download some yoga or pilates dvd's.
These are not just made for housewives. Professional athletes and bodybuilders (who also want to gain size and height as much as possible) use stretching every single day.

6. Get massaged. This loosens up the muscles, releases tension around the joints, and can actually help release growth hormones.

7. Don't smoke. This reduces the amount of small veins in your body, reducing blood flow and stunting recovery and growth.

8. Dieting works. The more food there is, the bigger you can get.
However, becoming obese will stunt growth. The best is eat a lot, and work out a lot. Then stretch a lot and finally, SLEEP.

9. Growth occurs the most during sleep. GET ENOUGH SLEEP! around 9 hrs of sleep EVERY SINGLE DAY.
No matter what. Gotta wake up early the next morning? Go to bed early!

-----------------------------------------------------------

Okay.. Now some information about me, that maybe will help you believe my data (which i assure you, is quite correct)

My Height: 183cm 6' 0"
Father Height: 188cm 6' 2"
Mother Height: 162cm 5' 4"
Brother Height: (16yr) 178cm 5' 10"

My family is vegetarian, for the last 11 years.
So my father was not, i was partially, my brother was.
(I, however, still eat meat when i was not at home.)

As you can see, being vegetarian does not affect growth: my brother is as tall as me, even though i ate meat and he did not.
He will probably become taller then me.
This is genetics. You can not do anything about it.

I could have maybe gotten a bit bigger, however, if i would not have smoked since i was 14.

I am currently doing University in Holland, where i was so kind to search for scientific research performed on this subject.
What i have posted are proven facts.

I have not posted research because i do not think all of you would understand and frankly, it was too much effort.

Finally, there is one final word..

Think about growing.
I study psychology, and oddly enough, research has shown that your muscles can get bigger by merely thinking (visualizing, really thinking about the exercise, feel the weight, feel the muscles) about working out.

This means that if you spend half an hour stretching every day (which is good for you no matter what).
You should spend that half an hour thinking, feeling, visualizing your muscles lengthening up.

But I am sorry for you guys, 99% is genetics =(
Trust me, i want to gain 10cm, but I simply can not.

do both u and ur brother look like ur dad more than your mum???
i think both of you have the genes of your dad thats cool
however i believe that some child are very tall while their parents/grandparents are short... probably recessive or natural

RE: The truth about Height Gains
Height is not mostly based on genetics. Nor is there any foolproof way to determine maximum height. The rest is pretty much true.

Age: 14
Now: 6'0" < WOHOOO!!!!!!
Goal: 6'8"
Weight: 198 lbs
Goal: 252 lbs

RE: The truth about Height Gains
I dont understand where you think people are denying this. The majority of people here agree with most of your information, and none of it is new.

edit: I misspoke. Actually a lot of it is wrong.

You dont lose two inches during the day because of "muscle relaxation". Its because your spine is compressing.

And number three is completely wrong.

and hanging will make you taller, whats this talk about muscles???

You didn't post research because you dont have any. All your information is either common knowledge or wrong.

most of this stuff is either

Starting height:5'7 (in August)
now:5'8 at night
Goal height:5'10
Dream Height:6'0
Gender:Male
age:17

im sure this is news to some but i think most of us already knew all of what he just said. Yes it is true that visualizing ur muscles being bigger actually do make them bigger. I saw that on manswers.

Height is not mostly based on genetics? What makes you say that?

If you live in America or in Western Europe country, you have everything at your disposition to be healthy(and grow).Food,lifestyle,....

What could someone do more, hang upside down all day....?

Height is partially/mostly genetics because you can't grow taller than your limit and with the lifestyle of healthy people I think most aren't far from it.

RE: The truth about Height Gains
Genetics plays a HUGE part. While there are height estimators out there, as mentioend before there is no real way to determine your maximum height. Sure there are parents that are short who produced tall children and one can argue that this is proof that genetics isnt everything.. well, putting the nutritional factor aside, perhaps that child was genetically coded to be taller due to perhaps a recessive or hidden gene? I dunno I'm not a science expert, but as far as I'm concerened, genetics plays a BIG part.

RE: The truth about Height Gains
Having access to plenty of food, and the other amenities of the west, does not equal the best growth. A large portion of the american diet is full of unhealthy potentially toxic compounds that inhibit growth. Along with the epidemic of obesity. America has become fat, and to many that is keeping them closer to the ground =p

RE: The truth about Height Gains
Good reality check but you're just bashing on the high hopers here.

*If you visualize your muscle to grow surely you can visualize YOURSELF growing also in height, what can it hurt?

I got a friend who was so short, he has an endocrologist- did some seasonal medications now he's still in puberty and he's 18!

I know lots of people that are taller than their parents; sure it's genetic code its beyond your control! but what is hardwork for? I'm working on a thread called Height The Truth, hopefully it'll let other people; with the same place as i am my perspective.

Nah.
